Virginia Legislators Committed to Community College Success
As a student of Wytheville Community College, I recently was part of a group that had the privilege to visit with several Virginia state legislators regarding their support of funding for the Virginia Community College System.
We felt it was imperative to make a positive and personal appeal for legislative support in continuing education for students of all ages, backgrounds, and financial circumstances. Our college president, Dr. Charlie White, began the day with “The legislators want to hear what you have to say; they want to know your story. This is about you, the students.”
When I decided to make a career change after staying home with two children and working in sales, Wytheville Community College was there. I entered the nursing program, and will graduate in May as a Registered Nurse. Because of the example of the educators I came into contact with, I’d like to become a nurse educator as well.
As I told the legislators, I can’t imagine getting a better education. I feel the nursing educators here are extremely intelligent – I really advocate this program, because of them. They care.
After recently being accepted into Carillion’s Adopt-A-Student-Nurse program, I know I am on the right track.
As our personal stories unfolded, the interest and sincerity of these very busy lawmakers became apparent. We were welcomed into their offices, greeted with warmth, and encouraged to speak freely.
We discovered that our concerns as students were also their concerns, and that they were both listening and hearing what we had come to say. It was a very productive day and the experience served to remind us that we have a voice and a responsibility to get involved!
