TCC Student Earns the Education Required to Become a Success

Shavanda Eley

I attend Tidewater Community College’s Portsmouth Campus and my major is business communication.

Community colleges have given people like you and me the opportunity to work and be close to our families, and friends, while receiving the education we need to become a success. Not only can I strive for a better life for myself and my family, but also become involved in multiple clubs and organizations.

Currently, I am president of our campus’ Phi Beta Lambda and vice president of Sci-Fi & Astronomy. While here, I have acquired leadership skills and confidence through attending leadership conferences and participating in community service events.

Being in Richmond to thank our legislators for everything they have done to support all of our community colleges was a tremendous experience. While visiting with our legislators, I spoke with L. Gail Henderson, legislative assistant to Sen. L. Louise Lucas, and Del. Matthew James. Our campus wanted to see a good outcome for Gov. McDonnell’s Budget Bill.

Our governor introduced a great budget of $87 million that will not only help financial aid but also academic and workforce training programs. It will help recruit and maintain full-time faculty members to help students grow and succeed.
