Student: Welding program provides pipeline to the workforce

On Thursday January 20th, 2011 I had the chance to go to Richmond and visit the General Assembly. This was a pretty unique experience because it is not every day that you get to see and talk to our senators.

We had the opportunity to meet with Senator Quayle, Senator Lucas, and Senator Barlow. During our meetings with each Senator we each thanked them for their support of community colleges and told them why we chose our community college.

The reason I chose Paul D. Camp Community College is because it was close to home and it offered the classes that I was interested in taking. I am currently in my second semester at Paul D. and I am in the professional welding program.

My dad does a lot of welding in his line of work, and when I was 13 years old, he taught me how to do it. I have been helping him with the side jobs he does for farmers in our area ever since. I decided to get in the welding program at Paul D. so I can hopefully get my certifications and then get a job. The teacher is great. He works at the shipyard and is very knowledgeable about all different types of welding. I was also lucky enough to have some friends of mine from high school in class with me.

If it wasn’t for Paul D. I would still be in school, but i really don’t know what I would be studying. The college has given me a great opportunity to further improve my welding skills and hopefully get a job doing it some day.
