Student: "Virginia Western chose me"
In February I traveled to Richmond to meet the state delegates and senators who are so closely involved with local students’ educational futures. I listened intently to our college president, Dr. Sandel, explain how these lawmakers were “friends of the college” and had a vested interest in community college students.
On the cramped elevator ride downstairs I was reminded of the important relationship between lawmakers and students, both parties giving and receiving from the other. Not only did these public figures take the time to talk with us and divulge their efforts on our behalf, but they seemed concerned to hear in what ways their decisions had a direct impact on our careers.
I am thankful that this personal experience showed me how important it is to keep in touch with lawmakers as real people that benefit from their choices to protect Virginia’s higher education programs. To them, we were real students, eager to protect both ours and Virginia’s future.
My coursework at Virginia Western is in the social sciences degree program. I do not know what the future holds for my career. However I hope to continue to work in a people-oriented career and advance the causes I am passionate about, which I currently do through volunteering and work.
When it came to choosing a college, I’d have to say that Virginia Western actually “chose me,” because it was affordable and local: the perfect combination for a kid like me who doesn’t yet know what she wants to be when she grows up.
