Valentine Aikhu is SGA president at the Virginia Beach Campus and chairs the Student Federation Association at TCC

On Thursday January 13^th 2011, I was fortunate to get the opportunity to go to Richmond and visit our state lawmakers. This year, I was as excited about the trip to the general assembly as I was last year; it’s not every day I get a chance to have one-on-one face time with the state lawmakers, even if just to tell them:  Thank you and keep up the good work!

I am a computer science major hoping to one day become influential in the advancement of technology all over the world. It is not news that such a dream can only become reality by acquiring a solid education. I am a steadfast believer of a well-rounded education; that is why I get involved — and encourage others to get involved — with the law making process, especially on higher education.

I personally cherish the “legislative day” experience because where I am from (Nigeria) I was not allowed to have such privileges.

The Community College System and Tidewater Community College have given me an unforgettable experience considering my background. I grew up in Nigeria, where only the extremely privileged got the opportunity to choose to attend an extraordinary college or even think to further ones education. Thanks to the administration and faculty/staff of Tidewater Community College, this taboo dream for a middle class citizen of Nigeria is gradually manifesting into a reality for me.

As Student Government President, Tidewater Community College has presented me with the most life changing experience. Thanks to TCC, I have received countless training on becoming a more effective leader and student. Even beyond TCC, the opportunity to attend college  that I have been provided with is made possible thanks to the lawmakers who relentlessly pass laws and approve funding for my community college.

Their work has not only benefited me, but also countless students and alumni of Tidewater Community College.
