Student: "SVCC supports their students"
My name is Michael Dunson and I am a student at Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) enrolled in the general studies program with hopes of eventually majoring in mathematics. While at SVCC I have been an active student, a math tutor, student representative and have been involved in the student activities work study program.
On February 9 I was excited to have the privilege to travel with a group of my peers from SVCC to the General Assembly in Richmond. While there, I met with Delegates Tommy Wright and Roslyn Tyler and Senators Louise Lucas and Frank Ruff. We discussed my academic and career goals as well as my experience attending SVCC. I also discussed my concern about future cuts to the community college budget. Our group had the chance to express our opinion on why they should not cut the budget and explained how SVCC supports their students and the quality of education the college provides. The level of interest that the delegates and senators demonstrated for my education was overwhelming.

Later in the day, we had the chance to attend a committee meeting and had a photo opportunity with the senators and delegates. I thoroughly enjoyed my day at the General Assembly. Meeting my legislators was an experience that I will not forget.
