Student returns for degree, to inspire others
Mrs. Gloria Parham
Southside Virginia Community College
As a returning non-traditional college student at the age of 48, I was very honored and grateful to be selected as one of five students to represent Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) at an “Every Day is Community College Day” visit on February 2.
During this once in a lifetime opportunity, we were formally introduced and met with the following extraordinary individuals in person:
- Delegate Roslyn C. Tyler
- Supreme Court Justice Cleo E. Powell
- Susan Clarke Scharr, Clerk of the Senate
- Senator Yvonne Miller
- Delegate Tommy Wright
These extraordinary individuals are making history and living out their legacy. Each of these individuals have made a path where there is no path, and built a trail for future generations to come. They have accomplished this by giving voice to their dream to create a better life for their family and community.
I returned to school to personally obtain my college degree before turning 50 years old, as well as to be a positive role model for my grown children, nieces and nephews. My goal is to be a living example of how you can overcome the challenges of life and show that you are never too old to get an education.
I am pursuing two associate’s degrees – Administration of Justice and Business Administration — here at SVCC. I also work as a part-time postmaster for the Freeman, Virginia, post office. My husband, Michael Parham, is a blind disabled veteran is my biggest supporter.
As we toured the Virginia State Capitol Building, we observed a live interview of Governor Bob McDonnell and Anderson Cooper, Anchor/Reporter for CNN. We had an opportunity to sit in the Senate gallery and be formally introduced in the Senate by Sen. Frank Ruff, Jr. After they acknowledged us and we stood, the entire Senate Chambers and gallery applauded us. It was such an amazing and unforgettable educational experience.

This is an amazing story! I am the oldest daughter of Gloria Parham. My mother is truly an inspiration to me. She has done so much for others and it is so nice to see her accomplish things for herself. She truly lives and breathes, “You can do whatever you put your mind to!” And is modelling an excellent example of a strong woman to us girls. We love you dearly and are very proud of you mom!
This is absolutely AWESOME !! I don’t usually respond or reply to anything like this. This one was a must. I’m not surprise Gloria is doing this she’s always been an amazing lady. Regardless to obsticals that was in her path she used them as a stepping stone to “keep it moving”. I’m so proud of you as well, you are the epitome of a Lady of Virtue and an awesome example to ALL. I totally agree with Felisha – you have done a lot for others. It’s YOUR time / season, enjoy your harvest. Your Tabernacle Church Family in Seattle, WA loves you & we’re very proud of you as well.

Gloria,
I am so glad that you are a part of SVCC! You are an inspiration to our students, staff and faculty. Peace, Love, & Blessings to you and Michael, Mrs. Battle
GREAT JOB MOM!!! I am very proud of you. You have spent many years making sure that we and others have been cared for and you have always made it a point to keep us motivated to do what we have our mind set on. I am so glad that you have gone down this road to accomplish what YOU want to accomplish. You have been my biggest supporter and I am so ready to continue to be your loudest cheerleader. Keep doing what you are doing Mom, because you are doing an amazing job. You are more then an inspiration, you are now creating a path for others just like the ones that you mentioned.
Love you very much,
