Student: “Our legislators are regular people”

Michael Doss
My name is Michael Doss, and I am a sophomore at Virginia Highlands Community College in Abingdon, Virginia. I chose community college for several reasons, including the low tuition rates and the convenience. The biggest reason, though, was that I was not exactly sure what I wanted to do after high school.
Already, I have had many chances to explore career fields through wonderful student organizations such as Students in Free Enterprise and the SGA. I had another great opportunity when I went to Richmond to represent my school before our state senators and delegates.
This was my first trip to Richmond, and I was not sure what to expect. I was glad to find that our representatives really did care about what we had to say. Del. Joseph Johnson, Sen. William Wampler, Sen. Phillip Puckett, and Del. Terry Kilgore all listened patiently as we told them how important community colleges are to us and our community. Sen. Wampler also introduced us before the Senate. I came away with a renewed pride in our political system which relies on the input and approval of its citizens.
The trip also helped me realize that our legislators are regular people who have risen through hard work and determination. I have long considered going into the academic field, but this trip inspired me to possibly explore a career in public office. Either way, I am thankful for the many opportunities that have been presented to me by Virginia Highlands Community College with the support of our state legislators.
