A Future Politician?
“I want to be involved with politics,” says Rosanna Fernandez, a student at Central Virginia Community College student, to Senator Robert Hurt in the General Assembly building in Richmond.
She has joined her community college’s board members, administrators and the president in Richmond to meet with legislators and witness democracy in action. As the only student representative, Rosanna boldly leads her delegation in a discussion of budget preservation for her community college. Sitting in Senator Hurt’s office, it is apparent to all that she is already on the path to politics.
Rosanna successfully campaigned for the position of secretary in CVCC’s student government association. She feels the leadership experience will help her in the pursuit of a degree in international relations at the University of Virginia and towards getting her dream job with the United Nations.
A native of Venezuela, she came to the United States with her family in 2001 and speaks Spanish and English fluently. (She is also studying French and hopes to be fluent one day). With the community college down the street from her high school, Rosanna began taking courses through dual enrollment which made the transition into college easier. Her experience at the community college and her passion for politics has brought her to the General Assembly.
Handing Senator Hurt a list of the community colleges’ priorities, he jokingly asks, “Are you sure you’re not a poltician already?”
Maybe someday.
